Honda Joins Forces with Isuzu to Develop Heavy-Duty Fuel Cell System - Planned for Launch in 2027

On May 15, 2023, Isuzu Japan and Honda Motor announced in Tokyo, Japan, that they have signed a cooperation agreement for Honda to develop and supply fuel cell systems for Isuzu's fuel cell-powered heavy-duty trucks scheduled to be introduced to the market in 2027.

The joint development and production of a fuel cell-powered heavy-duty truck by Isuzu and Honda has already been licensed for operation on public roads in Japan.

Isuzu and Honda believe that fuel cell technology, which uses hydrogen as a fuel and produces no CO2 emissions, will be effective in achieving carbon neutrality in heavy-duty truck transportation. This will require addressing the need for large load capacity, long-duration operations, long-distance driving and rapid hydrogen refueling.

After the two companies signed an agreement in January 2020 to jointly research heavy-duty trucks with fuel cell (FC) power systems, the groundwork was laid to ensure compatibility between fuel cells and heavy-duty trucks and to develop basic technologies such as vehicle control technologies. The two companies currently plan to begin demonstration tests of prototype trucks on public roads by the end of the current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2024). By leveraging the experience and knowledge gained through joint research, the two companies will continue to make progress in developing products that meet the performance and condition requirements of heavy-duty trucks and satisfy customers.

Looking ahead, the two companies will leverage their respective strengths to accelerate the development of clean, low-noise, low-vibration fuel cell-powered heavy-duty trucks. This will help the entire industry, including logistics companies, shift to the use of clean energy and more aggressive use of hydrogen energy, through which the two companies will strive to achieve their common goal of a carbon-neutral, environmentally friendly society.
